The #1 goal for every small business owner is to reach more customers to sell their products.
Of course I include myself here, since I’m a small business owner as well. I’m always looking for new ways to position my business in front of my target audience, which is YOU. In order to do that I provide you with free information and marketing tips you can use to promote your own stuff.
In my Marketing Guide for Craft Makers I stress the importance of having a business plan and tell you exactly what needs to be included. It is also a very good idea to have a marketing plan that will set you apart from your competition. This marketing plan should outline how you will reach your ‘perfect customer’.
There are lots of different ways to effectively market your products and services, many more than you and I will ever have the time and money for. That is why you need to narrow down your marketing efforts to the ones that will work best for you and your business.
I created this list of 6 Marketing Ideas because I think they work well for small businesses on a limited budget.
1 – Introduce yourself to local business owners
Whenever you visit a local store or meet a fellow business owner try to strike up a friendly conversation. Ask questions about their business, talk about the weather or the local sports team. Whatever it takes to get them taking. Before you know it they will ask you what you do and exchange business cards with you. The more you do this, the easier it gets.
2 – Use magnets to advertise on your car
Car magnets are cheaper than you might think. You can get eye catching car door magnets starting at only $12 at vistaprint.com or check out your local print shop for outdoor magnets. This is a very inexpensive way to advertise your small business locally and while you’re traveling. Make sure your phone number or website address is easy to read from a car length away.
3 – Leave comments on related blogs
Every small business owner should have a web presence and write regular content. That being said, a good way to get visitors to read your articles is to leave thought provoking comments on related blogs that write about similar topics. People that leave comments will read several other comments before adding their own. If you have something interesting to say, add it as a comment and then continue the conversation on your own site.
4 – Plan your next Holiday promotion early
Start planning your holiday promotions way ahead of time. October is when you should be thinking about end of the year promotions. Find something free to give away to your customers and sign them up on your newsletter. Pick holiday gifts for your best customers with time to shop around for the best deals. Write your website content, email campaigns and ad copy now to save yourself a ton of stress later on.
5 – Create a YouTube video channel
YouTube videos are a huge asset and are fairly simple to make. You don’t even need a fancy video camera or editing programs. Use your smart phone and record yourself making a few of your products, record helpful tips or make fun ‘how to’ videos. You will be able to capture a whole new audience (millions of potential viewers) for your small business. Take a look at our YourTube video channel here.
6 – Create a digital brochure
If you already have a print brochure then this is pretty easy, simply copy the content into digital format and add a link to it on your existing site. Adding a digital brochure gives your visitors an easy way to grasp exactly what you are about and the products or services you offer. Keep your digital brochure professional, but be personal and appeal to emotions by trying to connect with your visitors. Lead with a benefit and always close with a call to action.
Like I mentioned before, there are hundreds, if not thousands of different ways to promote your small business. You could spend a lot of money on advertising or hire marketing professionals. If you are on a small budget and have limited time, try out these 6 Small Business Marketing Activities That Work and slowly incorporate other ideas until you find the ones that work best for you and your customers.
