Keeping your website looking fresh and up-to-date is a must when you’re in the craft business.
One of the websites my husband and I have been running together since early 2008 is about making lamps and various other cool functional household items made out of recycled glass bottles. The Bottle-Lamp website/blog started out as a way for us to display and sell our finished crafts products.
We don’t sell our bottle crafts any longer and started to focus the website on the ‘How To’ part instead. These days we share instructional videos, write inspirational, step-by-step and review articles, as well as share DIY project pictures sent to us by our fellow crafters. Our craft site is in need of a make over, click here to judge for yourself.
Over the years the Bottle-Lamp website has grown into the #1 bottle crafting resources community. We receive more than 500 daily visitors from all parts of the world, with the majority coming from the US and England. The website is functional and it has a responsive theme so it loads properly on all size screens, but the layout, colors and style look very outdated.
I started looking for a new WordPress theme especially for craft makers.
There are a ton of different themes to choose from, you can find free WP themes here or check out premium themes on Creative Market here. In the past I made my own themes using a program called Artisteer, but I want to try something different. *Warning – Changing a theme can create unforeseen issues. Always remember to make a backup before you change your website theme.
The 5 Craft Themes I Like So Far:
Loma Craft – Premium Blog Theme
Loma is a responsive, retina ready and easy to use WordPress theme that comes with 6 different styles, Food, Fashion, Health & Beauty, Recipe, Travel and of course Crafts. With unlimited customization possibilities this paid blog theme ($48) can help crafters in creating a personal blog that is as unique and beautiful as the crafts are.
Kappe – Premium Portfolio Theme
Kappe a premium responsive portfolio style theme ($48) with a masonry blog layout. It’s a solid website theme that uses well known concepts and coding. This theme gives full customization choices with unlimited colors, sliders and sidebars, it is pixel perfect and comes with retina ready icons. Kappe will show of anyone’s crafts beautifully.
Artificer – Free eCommerce Theme
Artificer is a free, responsive theme from WooThemes. Whether you are viewing the theme on your desktop, your tablet or your smartphone, it will respond and deliver an optimized design for that device. This theme also makes full use of all of WooCommerce features. Making selling craft items a very easy and seamless experience. If you’re selling crafts online than you can learn more about WooCommerce here. This theme has been targeted towards small start-ups and for those in the arts and craft industry.
Craftiness – Premium Feminine Theme
Craftiness is ideal for female craft bloggers (not sure if my husband would like it). It’s a little bit more expensive than other themes ($79.95) but well worth it. It is a child theme for the Genesis Framework and is available in the StudioPress “Community Marketplace”. This crafty theme features 4 color styles, 6 mix-and-match layout options, custom header, menus and background, theme options and all the other features of the Genesis Framework.
Awaken – Free Magazine Style Theme
Awaken is an elegant magazine WordPress theme with two main widget areas. This theme is a responsive layout which is created using twitter bootstrap, featuring theme options panel, featured slider, ad widgets, YouTube video widget and social media. A modern style theme with great customization options. This theme might just be perfect for our craft site.
Website styles and the way people browse changes over time. Having a responsive website is a must now since Google’s latest search engine algorithm updates. Plus, an outdated, hard to maintain theme can easily break a DIY blog or online craft business. We’re ready for a change for our craft site and I will be updating the bottle-lamp website in the near future.
Which one of these themes do you like? Can you recommend a theme for our bottle crafting site that we might want to use? Please leave a comment below.
